This weekend we concluded the “Becoming” sermon series by looking at the missional disciplines of service and evangelism. You can listen to or download the message HERE.
So many Christians say they just want to be fed, but if all we ever do is eat, we will end up overweight and unhealthy. Food is essential for growth but its main purpose is to provide our bodies with energy for exercise and mobility, brain and bodily functioning. The missional disciplines help us take the nutrients we have gained from getting alone with God, mediating on his word, worshipping and learning from each other in community and doing something with them. It’s the inbreathing/outbreathing of the spiritual life.
As the people of God we do not exist only to worship God and build up one another, we also exist to minister to the world around us. The foundation of our existence is the vision of the whole human family reconciled to God, one another and creation.
This is our gospel: that Jesus has saved us from the penalty of sin and given us the presence of the Holy Spirit; and at the end of time, he will come again to complete what he has begun - saving us from the dominion and very presence of sin and evil. A new creation, a world cleansed of all brokenness.
But I am convinced that this gospel only makes sense when it
is rooted in a community that believes it, lives it and proclaims it. A church
that announces the good news in both word and deed.
We have been called to live and to speak and to bring this good news into reality.
