Just read the cover story in Christianity Today on Dr. Tim
Keller.
Keller planted Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan in 1989. He started with a small group of New York executives who had recently come to faith and encouraging them to bring their friends they wanted to introduce to Christ.
They did no advertising, believing New Yorkers would be skeptical of someone selling them something. Instead, Keller focused on influencing the influential.
Tim’s interest in art and music
was an indispensable gift in communicating. His omnivorous reading also helped.
New York is a city of high achievers to whom, Keller says, it made sense that a
minister should be a scholar of ancient texts, exposing them to ideas and
information beyond their experience.
In their highly urban context, Keller stuck to four simple rules (four rules that we will also seek to follow at The Gateway Church).
- Never talk politics
- Always preach with a non-Christian audience in mind: not merely in avoiding offense, but exploring every text to find its good news for unbelievers as well as believers.
- Emphasize excellence in music and art: Redeemer’s worship is traditional, filled with hymns, corporate prayers and scripture readings.
- Call people to love and bless the city.
Good reading about you vision Paul. Jim Calhoun posted it on our site. I was going to invite you to our reunion tomorrow at Pioneer Park here in D.M. but it looks like you're vacationing. My name is Pat Edwards, Jim and I were in the ministry together during the 70's. We were called Jesus People, and went through out Iowa witnessing to God's love. Also had a live in discipleship program for men and women. About 40-60 of us lived in a commune way of life for several years, with the main fellowship being about 200 believers. God's blessings to you and your new fellowship. May the King of Glory be lifted up!
